Advanced Studies

The University of Music offers post-graduate courses to meet the further education requirements for those who wish to specialise.
Advanced Studies may also suit those who for various reasons (family, professional, etc.), are unable to follow the full time Master of Arts or who intend to specialise in particular areas. 

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) and the qualifications it awards, such as these Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) SUPSI, are recognised by the Swiss Confederation under the Federal Law on Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts of 6 October 1995 and subsequent amendments.

  • The MAS in Music Composition is aimed at musicians who already have a degree in music, who want to further explore aspects relating to composition and integrate their training through relevant analytical tools.

  • The course is aimed at musicians who already have a degree in music, who wish to broaden their knowledge of the repertoire of the last hundred years and increase the performance skills related to their instrument. It is possible to specialize in contemporary chamber music.

  • This training course is aimed at those who wish to retrain professionally or at professionals already active in the field who wish to improve their skills and acquire a broader overview of the many challenges of today's cultural market.
    The MAS is organized by the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana in scientific collaboration with the Fondazione Fitzcarraldo in Turin.

  • The MAS in Wind Orchestra Conducting is aimed at musicians who already have a degree in music, who want to further explore aspects relating to wind orchestra conducting and integrate their training through relevant analytical tools and knowledge of repertoire and orchestration for wind ensemble.

  • The DAS in Gregorian chant, paleography and semiology is aimed at musicians/musicologists who already have a degree in music, who are looking for specialist training and qualification focused on obtaining the skills necessary to analyse and interpret documents related to the musical-liturgical repertoires of the western tradition of Christian chant. The DAS also aims to provide the practical and artistic tools necessary to deal with conducting and interpreting the Gregorian musical repertoire.

  • The course is aimed at all those who have completed instrumental/vocal training and now want to improve their knowledge of teaching and methodologies related to teaching a musical instrument or singing. The curriculum includes a series of group lessons, a practical work placement, and the preparation and completion of a final written work.
    The qualification obtained does not permit teaching in public schools.

  • The CAS in String Pedagogy is aimed at all those who have completed instrumental training and now want to improve their knowledge of teaching and methodologies related to teaching an instrument. The programme will take place over two academic years. The CAS includes a series of group lessons and the preparation and completion of a final written work.

  • The CAS in Elementary Music Education offers a refresher course and professional retraining focused on in-depth study of topics relating to teaching music in pre-schools and infant schools. The course is intended for those who teach, or intend to teach, in the aforementioned school settings, and wish to learn more about the pedagogical aspects of group music teaching. The qualification does not permit teaching in public schools.

  • The CAS in Ensemble conducting (Contemporary Repertoire) is aimed at musicians who wish to further their knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of conducting contemporary repertoire.
