According to its legal requirements, the University School of Music pursues four mandates: education, research, continuing education/post-education, and service provision.
The SUM is a member of the Conference of Swiss Universities of Music (CSUM) and the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen (AEC).
In the Academic Year 2021/22, the SUM had 351 students enrolled, with an equal gender distribution (176 female, 175 male), and offered 20 study programmes including Bachelor's, Master of Arts, and Continuing Education programmes.
